Home Visits

Home visits have good and bad points, and personally I tend to find both have their place in the hairdressing field. I have worked in a salon and watched, as people have left not really enjoying the whole experience. I have also visited people’s homes to complete their hair treatments and watched, as they have had to try and have their hair done whilst also maintaining usually a home and small children.

Since I have been a mobile hairdresser I have enjoyed the experience of allowing people who are unable for whatever reason to still enjoy and benefit from having their hair done. I have recently completed haircuts on some people who have suffered postnatal depression, unable to leave her home due to this condition. Recognised as she trembled when she met me at the gate that perhaps this was a far as she had been for some time. Perhaps having her hair done in her own home may give her the confidence to go outside again. We struck up a rapport straight away, and I hope I can be part of her once again having the courage to venture out into the world, with my hair cut hopefully.

Working for three years in a busy local salon, also has its benefits and provides a sense of community for all the local people. Sometimes we would have visitors to the shop purely because they would meet an old friend and have a coffee, pass some time and enjoy the ambience. Watched as bridal parties would come in and enjoy the whole pampering process whilst discussing the wedding arrangement. Then on the day the special treats offered to the party, champagne, banners, confetti.

As you can see both forms of engaging in the hair dressing situation could have good and bad points, and as I say I have been part of both.

A salon can offer more facilities, being able to house the larger equipment like a climazone. Although most of the equipment used in a salon can be purchased in portable form, and most items are easily found in the home, I mean who doesn’t have a shower? and a hair dryer, straighteners.

In a salon you can rest your tools on surfaces without the worry of them staining sides, or damaging articles. In the home, a good mobile hairdresser will ensure that your home is protected from hot equipment or hair dyes.

The large mirror in the salon, to watch yourself being pampered watching the progression of the transformation. Sometimes this is a relief for some clients, not all clients want to look at themselves for hours on end. The look can be surveyed in the home at any time by a normal hand held size mirror.

Getting out of the house and almost using the visit to the salon as a social occasion. As I have pointed out that some people cannot actually leave their homes, and if people would like a hair cut to be a social visit, multiple bookings can be made and your family & friends can enjoy the experience, or not if you so choose.

Not having to leave your house will help protect the hairstyle. Ensuring you do not have to encounter the rain or blowing winds before you even reach your car or worse still the bus stop.
You do not have to try and convince someone to have the children whilst you attend the hairdressers. They are in their own home and can play with their own toys and friends.
You don’t have to try and find a car parking space; that will be the hairdressers’ problem.
Having friends around to take part in the process, choosing the hairstyle, giving their opinions on the end the result.

I have found the whole experience of visiting someone’s home to do a hair cut can instantly put them at ease and they have trusted you to enter their home, so a lot of their fears around salons have been taken away.
The people I have visited with illnesses that would not normally be able to access a salon have been very grateful for the opportunity to have their hair done at home. Lots of illnesses can stop people leaving their homes and I relish the fact I am able to reach out to those people.
Salons are usually open at particular times and days; if you discuss your requirements with your mobile hairdresser they may be able to accommodate your needs. I recently had a request to travel quite a long distance out of my working area, on a Sunday morning to do a bridal hair. This was negotiated and we came to an agreement, which allowed her to have her hair done on the day of her wedding.

Try the experience of your local mobile hairdresser you may enjoy it.
