Pregnancy and Hair

Everything that goes on in our body has an effect on our hair, so pregnancy being a big change in our bodies and hormones is definitely going to have an effect.
Here are some of the common complaints I hear from women during pregnancy and following the birth of their child.

Hair becoming dry during and  after pregnancy
Hair falling out  during and after pregnancy
New growth around hairline, face and body
Loss of hair after the birth

During Pregnancy

All these changes happening to your hair are completely normal. Our body changes when we are pregnant and more estrogens are produced for the baby but also for you too. Estrogens help the hair grow so when pregnant hair may look and feel fuller and thicker, also new hair around the hairline, face and body may appear; this is due to the estrogens being produced.
There are many different ways to remove the new growth such as plucking or waxing. Hair becoming dry after pregnancy could be caused by the massive change that has happend to your body, stopping eating properly and stopping an intake of vitamins. To prevent your hair being dry you could buy a deep penetrating conditioner and use it once a week until dryness goes away.
Another way is to continue taking vitamins which are good for your hair but everything else in your body too. Try to continue the healthy eating after pregnancy as well our bodies are important just as much as your babies and any nasty habbits that were destroyed keep it up.

After the Birth

When hair falls out after pregnancy this is due to estrogens not being produced after baby is born. Hair normally goes back to normal after six months of baby being born.

Colouring hair when pregnant

Colouring and perming hair when pregnant has not been confirmed safe. From my experience some women are fine but other cases have not been too pleasent usually when colour was painted onto the skin and scalp it went red, blotchy and sore. Colouring agents are soaked up through the skin so to avoid this if you decide to colour your hair have it foiled or through the cap to be on the safe side.
